If work isn't too totally insane on Thursday (which it might well be) I'm going to go spend some time with Gabriele Basilico's beautiful photos of the Bay Area currently on view at SFMOMA during my lunch break. I was really inspired by hearing him speak about them a couple weeks ago, and I'm eager to get another look.
And then Saturday afternoon SFMOMA continues their Emile de Antonio film series with screenings of Underground, about radical '60s group the Weathermen, and In the King of Prussia, which covers Catholic pacifist group Plowshares 8. Sam Green, director of 2002's The Weather Underground, will be introducing the films, and the first one starts at 1pm. Again, so freakin' excited!
Finally, after the films I'll be shopping the Eternal Spring event at SomArts, doing my best to find the items that tend to the Pre-Raphaelite goddess side of my personality. Want to join me there or for dinner at Custom Burger after? Let me know!
"Former stripper and prolific author Stephen Elliott's memoir follows the narrator on a dizzying ride through past and present, from a group home for troubled adolescents in Chicago to shooting galleries and homeless encampments in San Francisco, where he searches for deeper and darker thrills. His writing has been featured in The New York Times, GQ, Best American Non-Required Reading, and Best American Erotica."
That cover doesn't lie. You bet there's some S&M in there.
I don't know if there is anything more sad than arriving at the door of the Crucible on a Friday night for their Industrial Chic opening to find the gate closed with a big ol' "Sold Out" sign tacked onto it...and me with no ticket. I should have been more organized! Meanwhile, from deep within the building I could hear a periodic shutter-rattling detonation followed by cheers from the crowd. It was like being locked out of the circus.
At Gray Area Gallery - PHoto REALness. This space is a fine addition to the SOMA block that already houses both Slim's and DNA Lounge. When I was there briefly on Saturday night the DJ was spinning electroclash that provided a perfect soundtrack to the beautifully sleazy photographs on the walls. I knew Nikita and Safety Scissors were going to be on the decks later on in the evening, but I did not linger.
Bigotry, remixed:
Bobby Muckle is VP of the Connecticut Right to Life Corporation. Watch a remix of his nonsensical and bigoted testimony against same-sex marriage, including such highlights as comparing contraception to eating the apple in the Garden of Eden.
Believe it or not it's already time for the fall 2007 shows, kicking off in New York next week. I'm looking forward to Sue Stemp's February 3rd show, certain to appeal to my rockergirl side. That's Theodora Richards, Chiara Clemente, and Natalie Rock being photographed by Natalie's dad Mick in some of Stemp's fall styles at the Beatrice Inn, above left. And later, during Paris fashion week, Sophia Kokosolaki will be debuting her first runway collection for Vionnet. Kokosolaki designed the dress Bjork wore when she sang Oceania during the opening ceremonies of the Athens Olympics. To say that I am excited to see what she will do for Vionnet is a gross understatement.
Even though part of me still thinks of Christian Lacroix as the butt of an AbFab joke ("La-cwah, darling! La-cwah!"), his brand of over-the-top he presented in the spring couture makes the little girl in me want to play dress-up. A giant poofy dress with watercolor peonies all over it? Yes, please!
Mmm Armani. I can imagine Lauren Bacall walking into a nightclub in this, and watching Bogie's cigarette fall clean out of his mouth. Serious movie star glamour.
Galliano has totally ruined me for the rest of the couture, I'm afraid. Karl Lagerfeld turned in a perfectly lovely show for Chanel, but I'm still dreaming about origami dresses. The first thing I thought when I saw Lagerfeld's design above was that it vaguely reminded me of the dress Laura did for the Couture Challenge that got smacked for looking like a French maid's outfit. I like the froofy, but even Shalom Harlow can't make those dumb-ass glasses look good.
The spring couture is here! The spring couture is here! And oh my goodness, John Galliano's designs for Christian Dior are to die for. I literally gasped when I saw the dress above. Ball attendees (you know who you are), your gowns are ready.
I fully believe in backing my ideals with my spending power, so I eagerly clicked on the new style.com feature promising oodles of eco-savvy shopping. I'm assuming that a lot of the pieces have been chosen because they're made with renewable resources, such as the wood and silver necklace by Stephen Dweck or the Tashkent canvas wedges above. But upon further research it turns out that Dweck also includes diamonds in his designs, and Tashkent more commonly uses leather and suede. Maybe it's useful to buy the more "green" items in a particular line to encourage designers to do more in that direction, but I'd prefer to stick with brands that are all conscious all the time. Especially when the stuff ain't cheap.
How cute is this Proenza Schouler dress? And how excited am I that their designs for Target will be available February 4? And that the clothes will start showing up at Buffalo Exchange about a month or two after that? Yes I love it when I can buy cheap fashion for even more cheap.
Style.com has just expanded the functionality of their "Lookbook" tool, where you can gather images that you like from the site into a collection that you can email or share. That giant sucking sound you hear is the rest of my work day disappearing down this particular rabbit hole.
I was sad to hear recently that the design house Rochas had folded, leaving its main man Olivier Theyskens without a job. Not for long though, as he was instantly snapped up by Nina Ricci. I really like the dress of his Reese wore to the Golden Globes last night: great structure, and I dig the surreptitious pattern and the diagonal detailing. I felt sad all over again seeing Reese without Ryan though, and Aimee pointed out that she doesn't look like she's been eating. However it could be she's just cold, as every woman wearing a strapless gown last night looked like she wanted to make a beeline to the nearest space heater. Nothing like a cold snap to make you wish you hadn't decided to show off your shoulders.
