Roller skating on Saturday night is still the Main Event, as it were, but there are a few more ways I'm celebrating my birthday this week.
Thursday night, as if just for me on my birthday proper, the Pacific Film Archive is hosting their annual Cine/Spin event, where UC student DJs will be spinning live music over Luis Bunuel's film Simon of the Desert. Tickets are $9.50 general admission and the movie starts at 7:30.
And then Friday night one of my favorite local bands The Hot Toddies is playing at Blake's on Telegraph along with Or The Whale, Agent Ribbons and The Attachments. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 9pm.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced it's considering whether to list four species of Arctic seals under the Endangered Species Act due in part to climate change. The Center for Biological Diversity, a species-advocacy group, petitioned the agency last year to consider protecting ribbon seals due to disappearing sea ice and other concerns. NOAA agreed Wednesday to review ribbon seals' status as well as that of bearded, ringed, and spotted seals. "While the four species of ice seals in Alaska all utilize various types of sea ice habitats, they use the ice in different ways," said Doug Mecum of NOAA. "Therefore, careful status reviews of each species is warranted." The agency said it will finish review of ribbon seals by the end of the year. CBD was pleasantly surprised the agency agreed to evaluate the seals, but it maintained a realistic perspective on listing. "Any Arctic scientist paying attention knows it's not just the polar bear, it's not just the ribbon seal, it's the entire ecosystem and all of the species are in trouble," said CBD's Brendan Cummings.

I'm reading Michael Pollan's new book, In Defense of Food, and you know what that means. More tweaks to how I eat! I became a vegetarian/pescetarian after reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, and am coming up on my one-year anniversary of no-meat in May. Now, after reading this new eater's manifesto, I'm ready to start aggressively cutting processed foods out of my diet, spending more time preparing my meals, and eating more locally-grown produce. To that last point, I'm joining the Eatwell Farm CSA and will hopefully pick up my first box next week already!
