succedaneum
I'm home sick from work today getting over the last of my bad cold, and I was pretty much out of commission for the entire weekend as well. Which meant I had to miss my show at Bimbo's Friday night. Which made me sad:
The Mother Hips
dios (malos)
Black Fiction
But I did get the chance to crash out in front of a DVD, something I haven't done in months. Namely Camille Claudel, with Isabelle Adjani and Gerard Depardieu as Claudel and Rodin respectively. It's an excellent film for anyone interested in Claudel's work, and Adjani perfectly captured her artistic intensity shifting into madness. Would her mind have deteriorated even without her relationship with Rodin? We'll never know, just like we'll never know how much of his work from that period she might have sculpted herself. It got me thinking a lot about the plight of the female creative as lover, collaborator, and muse. It's poignant that one of the best places to see her work is at the Musee Rodin in Paris, where it is exhibited right next to Monsieur Rodin's. Then again, his sculptures of her are truly beautiful as well.
The other show I missed was at the Independent Saturday night, but I know Dave was there and want a full report:
Dengue Fever
elephone
Scrabbel
Of course I did manage to DJ late Saturday night (priorities!), and then Sunday afternoon I wandered over to the Lake Merritt Sailboat House to check out Oaklandish's Radio Regatta. The tunes were fantastic, and I very much regret missing my chance to go rowing with Criollo and Banshee, but the beautiful sunshine was making my head get all 'splodey and I had to go lie down again.
Speaking of which, time to go join the kitties in the sunbeam.

Feel better!
Hey I actually wrote down Elephone's name the other day because I've heard a few of their songs on SOMAfm's "Indie Pop Rocks!" station, and loved them. Would like to hear more. Do you ever listen to SOMAfm? If so, Indie Pop Rocks is great! I've been learning about so many great new indie bands from them. And from you!
Hey, ever been to the Rodin sculpture garden at Stanford? Gates of Hell holy shit! I used to go sketch there when I was in high school.. been meaning to go back...
i know some other people who swear by somafm, i definitely have to check them out. i lurve elephone, i've seen them live a couple of times now and will doubtless do so again as soon as possible.
i finally made it to the rodin garden at stanford when i took some time off just before the holidays last year, totally loved it and photographed the hell out of it. the musee rodin in paris has another copy of the gates of hell, which is the first place i saw it. freaking amazing. i do adore rodin's sculpture, i just get all conflicted when i think of him re: claudel.
