Last night I went to a Frameline screening of the 2004 documentary Derek Jarman: Life as Art, at the SF LBGT Community Center. The film is chock full of clips from his films and memories from his friends and collaborators, and it was totally inspiring to hear about this artist who "loved, was loved, and loved life." His last words: I want the world to be filled with little fuzzy ducks.
Next I stopped by the Ninth Street Independent Film Center for Cinema Lab: Chamber of Live Wanders. Christopher Musgrave had installed the audio-visual piece Alpha Channel in one of the center's rooms, in which red, blue, and green lights pulsed in time to insistent ambient tones. When you closed your eyes you could still see the lights beating from the insides of your eyelids, and the colors also spilled through the room's frosted window to the sidewalk outside. Apparently there was also a live performance by the Lemurians and Phase Chancellor going on elsewhere in the building that somehow tied in, but by the time I hipped to that fact it had ended. It was enough to sit in a room with Alpha Channel for a while and let it alter my brain.
The final stop for the evening was Bottom of the Hill for the Sholi show. You know when you can tell you're going to love a band just from their sound check? I really should have napped in my car until it was time for Sholi to go on, but I wanted to give the other bands a chance. But then Sholi got on stage and proceeded to show everyone else how it was done. I can't find an mp3 online to upload, so please brave myspace to listen to a few of their tracks. I promise you it's worth it.
I'm DJing Sunday!
Sunday morning:
Matokie
9-noon PST, Sunday December 15
KALX Berkeley 90.7fm
I'm going to be in that slot regular-like, at least for a little while, starting after the first of the year. I also should attend a Monday night KALX night at the Ruby Room some time soon so I can watch exactly what the DJing there entails so I can work up the guts to sign up to do it one of these Mondays. Gulp.
Blow up the Death Star!
Straight outta Hip-Hopistan comes the Arab League. Look alive, infidel! (If the site takes a while to load, you can also find them on YouTube.)
