forehanded
from the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco:
"Joyce Carol Oates' prodigious output and talent for creating characters who draw us in never ceases to amaze. Nor does the insight she offers into all strata of human behavior - from Jeffrey Dahmer and Marilyn Monroe to the plainly dressed housewife next door. The newest novel by this National Book Award and PEN/Malamud Award winner is The Gravedigger's Daughter, a sprawling, masterful epic about a young woman's struggle for identity and survival in post-World War II America."
Speaking of American authors who like to dwell on the dark side, I've got Cormac McCarthy on the brain right now with Oprah having chosen one of my fave recent books The Road for her book club and all. No Country for Old Men rocked my world when I read it some time back, and I'm very curious to see what the Coen brothers have done with it. Reviews out of Cannes are hopeful. John Hillcoat, director of The Proposition and um the latest Maroon 5 video, will be directing the film adaptation of The Road for 2009 release. I don't think anyone else could do it justice.
Plans to see Young Galaxy at Bottom of the Hill last night were scrapped at the last minute when Aimee and I received word that the club was closed for emergency repairs and the show had therefore been cancelled. Sad. And yet happy! Because we went to go see Knocked Up instead. And ye gods I loved it. Please, America, make this the #1 movie this weekend instead of stupid Pirates 3! Also: cannot wait for Superbad. "Boop!"
